When Queen Victoria was asked to choose a capital for the then province of Canada, Her Majesty made a practical and politically diplomatic choice. Ottawa is effectively a point midway between Toronto and Quebec City and thus showed no favouritism to either the French or English colonies. Once rather remote and surrounded by forest, this spectacular bit of real estate overlooking the Ottawa River is part of a vibrant metropolis and the seat of Canadian government.

Visitors to Ottawa come for many reasons. Some seek history, found in the architectural wonders of the Parliament Buildings, the monuments dedicated to wars and soldiers of the distant past and present conflicts and in the many museums that strive to give face to Canada's road to nationhood.

Those in search of fun and activity will find great theatre, sports venues and a host of festivals throughout the year. February's Winterlude Festival centres on Rideau Canal, a recently named World Heritage site and ice skater's delight.
