Mount Washington Information

This mid-island treasure is only a three to four hour drive from Victoria, depending on the season and time of day you choose to travel. In winter, snow tires or the carrying of snow chains is advisable. Where else can one enjoy a morning frolicking in winter's white powder and end the day with an evening of fine dining in a quaint harbour city that has more than a hint of Britain in its classic lines and architecture? Some choose to make Victoria their base and make a one day ski run to the mountain. Mount Washington is the second busiest winter sports destination in British Columbia after Whistler Blackcomb. Featuring an average snowfall of ten metres (33 feet) and a history of having good snow conditions from early winter to well past the Easter break, Mount Washington Alpine Resort has something for everyone and it starts with the skiing. The resort covers 1,600 acres and has 60 marked runs. The longest run is Linton's Loop at 1.9 kilometres (just over one mile). There are two high speed chairlifts; one quad and one six pack, two fixed-grip quads, one triple chair, one double chair, one platter lift, one handle tow, and one tube lift. The south side of the mountain has several acres dedicated to glade skiing near the Hawk Six Pack Chair.

Night skiing is a big draw at Mount Washington and the runs are open Thursday through Saturday nights and every night during holiday periods. The popular Coaster run, the Whiskey Jack Chair as well as the Stomping Ground Terrain Park are bathed in light giving fun seekers the chance to ski under the starts from the alpine level to the base lodge. Green acres and Easy Out are also open for night skiing and riding.

Cross country skiers will find 55 kilometres (34 miles) of cross country ski trails, some of which are located in adjacent Strathcona Provincial Park. Some trails are accessible via the Hawk Chair and some of the condominiums and vacation homes have ski-in and or ski-out access. Of note, there are over 20 kilometres (11 miles) of snowshoeing trails and a 200 metre (roughly 700 foot) all natural luge track.

Two terrain parks, The Stomping Ground and Easy Rider offer snowboarders the chance to show off their skills. Both parks are creatively and challengingly laid out with sculptured hits, flowing rails and more. Both are lit for night use. A snow tubing park located just past the Alpine Lodge is also night lit and has lift access. The Log Cabin offers hotdogs and snacks and evening bonfires. Kids less than 42 inches tall can ride free with an adult in the same tube.

The Alpine Lodge is the hub of Mount Washington Resort. Its central location is easily accessed by condo and vacation home guests and from the day parking areas. The lodge features Altitudes Sport and Gifts, a rentals area, secure lockers, groceries and a liquor store. Several dining venues are available such as the Alpine Cafeteria, Hungry Marmot Express and the Hawk Dog Stand. Fireweeds restaurant offers family dining and Fat Teddy's Pub has its own kind of fun. There are fully licensed childcare facilities and a snow school for both adults and children. In the Nordic Ski Trail area, the Raven Lodge offers a sports shop, rentals, a waxing area and locker rooms with showers, a sauna and more dining option. Those who love to explore the outdoors will love Mount Washington in the warmer seasons. Take your pick of hiking trails, mini golf, mountain biking and scenic chair lift rides. Mountain bikers have eighteen trails to choose from at present. They are serviced by two lifts, the Hawk Six Pack Express lift and the Eagle Express chair. Strathcona Park offers many hiking options as well. Those of intermediate and advanced skill levels can take the Della Falls Trail from the head of Great Central Lake to the base of the highest waterfall in Canada. The water takes a 440 metre (roughly 1500 feet) drop from Della Lake into the valley of Drinkwater Creek. The trail is 16 kilometres (9 miles) from the trailhead and takes about seven hours. It follows an old logging path that crosses wooden bridges and travels through second and old growth forests.

Want to do a bit of exploring off the mountain? Take a day trip to the charming seaside village of Comox. Roughly 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Mount Washington, the village is surrounded by the beautiful Comox Valley and the largest glacier on Vancouver Island... the Comox Glacier. Guests may also fly into the Comox Valley and Campbell River Airports as an alternative to Victoria International, which is just over three hours away.

Nanaimo is also a fun town to explore. It also sits seaside and is the second largest and third oldest city on Vancouver Island. Restaurants, boutique shops, museums and more abound. Nanaimo is also one of BC Ferries terminals, with service from Horseshoe Bay and Tsawassen on mainland British Columbia.
