Montreal Information
There is nothing quite like the spicy tang of authentic Montreal smoked meat or the chewy crunch of a bagel fresh from the weathered bricks of an oven that's been cranking out such treats for over a century. These are but two of the many culinary delights in this ethnically diverse cosmopolitan city that is the largest in Quebec and the second largest in Canada. Long before Ottawa, it briefly served as the capital of the Province of Canada from 1844 to 1849. Though the official language in Montreal is French, visitors will find little difficulty finding services in English.
Remnants of the city's early days may be found in the cobblestone streets and vintage buildings in Old Montreal or Vieux Montreal. A few of these historic structures have been reborn as luxury hotels or boutique inns. By the end of World War the centre of the city shifted closer to Mont Royal. After decades of gradual decline, Vieux Montreal received a reprieve starting in the 1960's and today is the centre of cultural life and municipal government.
Accommodations may be found in both Old Montreal and the newer parts of the city and range from quaint B&B's in restored vintage buildings to boutique hotels that have a bit of a European flair. Apartments, condos and luxury hotels may also be found throughout the area.
The Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Montreal> (Notre Dame Montreal Basilica) opened in 1829. Sporting the largest bell in North America, stained glass windows from Limoges, pine and walnut carvings and a blue vaulted ceiling studded with thousands of 24-karat gold stars this opulent church is well worth a visit.
Founded in 1931 the Jardin Botanique (Botanical Garden) is the second largest attraction of its kind in the world, after England's Kew Gardens. Open all year, in summer the exhibit expands by 181 acres of outdoor plantings. Thirty thematic gardens are on display including a rose garden, alpine garden and an unusual poisonous plant garden. A Tree House exhibit and a bonsai filled Japanese Tea Garden offers traditional tea ceremonies. The Insectarium (all you ever wanted to know about bugs) and the Montreal-Shanghai Lac de-Reve (Montreal Shanghai Dream Garden) are also highlights. Nearby residential areas also offer bed and breakfast venues, apartments and condominiums that create a chance to mingle with the locals.
The 1976 Olympics biking stadium now houses the Biodome with its natural history exhibit. Visitors follow pathways that lead through four ecosystems and are able to observe the flora and fauna in each, as well as experience extremes in temperature and humidity. EasyRez offers information and summer packages on many of Montreal's more popular visitor venues.
Laval houses the Cosmodome and adjacent Space Camp training center for budding astronauts aged nine and over. Filled with replicas of rockets, space ships and a full sized mock up of the space shuttle Endeavor, this interactive centre is a space explorers dream. Science buffs will also enjoy the interactive Montreal's Centre iSci on the old King Edward Pier complete with IMAX and Immersion Studios interactive theatre.
Skateboarders, strollers, bicyclists and street performers take full advantage of the warm weather and crowd popular Vieux-Port-de-Montreal (Old Port of Montreal). Take to the water and experience the impressive skyline with one of several companies offering sightseeing, dinner and party cruises. Of particular interest are the romantic night cruises where the city lights rival the stars for your attention, or the cruises during the popular International Fireworks Competition that offer the best view in the house, so to speak. Some of the Old Port buildings have been converted to modern condominiums and townhomes, or house B&B's that keep the nostalgic flavour very much alive.
Though not quite as aged as Old Quebec, the historic square in the heart of Vieux-Montreal is home to musicians, magicians and acrobats that entertain the crowds during the summer season. Diners may indulge in escargot or the more calorie laden but popular poutine (fries with cheese curds smothered in gravy) in open air cafes that provide excellent seats for the sport of people watching.
Montrealers have a unique way of escaping the bitter cold of winter and the sometimes humid summerssimply go underground. Beneath the traffic and pedestrian flow of the downtown core is an entire second city, complete with its own shops, restaurants and pedestrian walkways. Unlike the city topside, vehicle traffic is limited to the quiet, rubber wheeled Metro (subway) system that services seven hotels, 1,600 boutiques, 30 movie theatres, 200 restaurants, three universities, two colleges, two train stations, a skating rink, 40 banks, a bus terminal, an art museum, concert halls, the home ice arena of the Montreal Canadiens (hockey) and a cathedral. Yes, it is quite possible to spend a week in downtown Montreal and never see the light of day.
Though the underground city provides refuge, Montrealers love to celebrate their snowy clime. On weekends in late January to early February, the entire Ile Ste-Helene is transformed into a winter playground. Explore the massive snow castle, take a dog sled or horse drawn sleigh ride, or coast a toboggan down one of the many hills. Ice skating is quite popular not only here but also at one of the 195 outdoor and 21 indoor rinks throughout the city, including the huge outdoor venue in Vieux-Port.
The horse drawn caleshes, or horse drawn carriages continue their clip clopping along Old Montreal's streets. In winter fleece blankets offer a warm place to snuggle as you make your way through this cobblestoned winter wonderland. Many of these venues are available through EasyRez in assorted winter packages.
Montreal offers both cross country and downhill skiing venues either in city limits or within an hours drive. Cross country ski trails can be found in most city parks, including Mont Royal. The Lachine Canal is a local cross country ski favourite. Though Parc du Mont Royal has a small downhill ski slope, Mont St-Bruno with a vertical drop of 443 feet, it does include Quebec's largest ski school, a high speed lift and offers night skiing. Mont Tremblant Ski Resort is about a two hourdrive and Ste Sauveur is less than an hour. Combine your Montreal visit with a trip to Quebec City and also explore skiing at Mont Ste Anne.
Golfing is popular in the summer months and there are courses in the greater metropolitan area. Scenic courses are also scattered throughout the Laurentians including Mont Tremblant Resort and Mont Ste Anne. Biking is also in favour. There are more than 350 kilometers (217 miles) of cycling trails throughout the city.
The young at heart will find a bit of a thrill at La Ronde amusement park that is home to the Monstre, one of the tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. The popular International Fireworks Competition is held here each year in June and July. Check with EasyRez about information about these popular venues as well as available summer packages and last minute discounts.
